Poems of Pandemic Days by Alice Curley

  • NYE 2021

    I have no witty remarks
To soften the blows of 2020
    Happy wishes feels futile
    When prayers are ongoing
    Goals and plans feel foolish
    With a world of uncertainty
All we can do is choose
    To be wiser and kinder
To keep our faith and hope
To resolve not to give up
    Together

  • Unknown

    Waiting for the call

    To unlock the answer

    Was your worry justified

    Trying to think positive

    Praying for a negative

    December 22, 2020

  • Quarantine

    Endlessly trying

    To harness an illness

    As unpredictable

    As my first love was

    December 22, 2020

  • Shawshank Prison

    I hope to see you

On the other side Of Shawshank

Ice cold beer is on me

    Free as uncaged birds

    No space between us

    Breathing in ocean air

    Our hearts will sing

    Our redemption song

    December 22, 2020

  • Illness

    Illness is a lonely business

    Assuring others you are fine

    Desperately simultaneously

    Needing them there with you

While praying to be left alone

    December 22, 2020

  • Fading

    She was a shadow

    Of her former self

    I held her frail hand

    Watching her favorite film

She fell asleep before Dorothy got to Oz

I gazed at the wilted roses

    In her handcrafted vase

    It was not summer anymore

I would soon have to watch

    Seasons pass without her

    December 22, 2020

  • Light the Way

    The sky is permanent

    Our troubles are not

    Lightning piercing

    Through this darkness

    Reminds us to fight fiercely

For the light of our world

    To bring us back home

    December 22, 2020

  • Endless

    Pandemic Daze

    The month

    The day

    The hour

    The minute

    A constant blur

    With one exception

    The year

    December 22, 2020

  • 2020 Summer

    My summer flew by

    Full of magic every year

    Except for this one

    December 22, 2020

  • Relief

    Good news can stun you

    Disorient you even

    As the peace sinks in

    December 22, 2020

  • 2019

    I miss everything

I took for granted last year

    If I only knew

    December 22, 2020

  • 2020

    I am not feeling well
    Said or heard
    Shudder inducing
    In these pandemic days

    December 14, 2020

  • Look to the Sky

    When you find yourself

    Broken and beaten down

    Beyond the reach of hope

    Look to the sky

    It’s beauty will rescue you

    December 11, 2020

  • Them

Sitting on the edge of the bed
He held an apology in his throat
A near empty bottle in his hand
She sat at the kitchen table
    Holding a chipped coffee cup
    Tears trickling down
As she drank the last drop
She held a goodbye in her throat
    Neither of them would hear

    December 7, 2020

  • Our Stories

    This is for those

    Battling depression

    Grappling with anxiety

    Struggling to sleep

Trying to keep their chin up

    Trying to find the positive

    Trying to stay connected

    Forging their way through

Who do not tell a soul

    How much they are suffering

    For a mountain of reasons

Know that you are not alone

Years from now we will all

    Have powerful stories to tell

    Of making it through this

    We are living them now

    December 2, 2020

  • Is it you or me

We should be in love by now

    What a mystery

    November 28, 2020

  • Being in denial

Is not the worst place to be

    If it keeps you sane

    November 28, 2020

  • She can be ice cold

Or so full of love and warmth

    Your cold heart defrosts

    November 27, 2020

  • You will gain nothing

    By expressing your concern

    Radio silence

    November 27, 2020

  • You choose to tune out

What you prefer not to hear

    Tell me the reason

    November 27, 2020

  • Leaving

    I could walk away
    From this connection of ours
I do not think you can

    November 27, 2020

  • If it is frightening
To tell him that you love him
    He is not your love

    November 27, 2020

  • Just let your heart be
    Stop trying to control it
    Let it take the lead

    November 27, 2020

  • In the quiet night
    She dances inside my heart
    As I fall for her

    November 27, 2020

  • What should I tell her
    Here in magical limbo
    On the brink of love

    November 27, 2020

  • Her indifference
    Her absence of jealousy
    Perplexes my heart

    November 27, 2020

  • Above

    Look up to the stars
When you are lost and lonely
    Millions of wishes granted
    Floating above you
    Shrug off the timeline
    Dare to believe
    Wish for our miracle

    November 26, 2020

  • In times of intense stress
I think we all return to our default settings
    Our better selves dissolve

    November 26, 2020

  • 2020

    Pandemic Daze
    The month
    The day
    The hour
    The minute
    A constant blur
    With one exception
    The year

    November 26, 2020

  • The Date

I wish I marked down the date
You last held me in your arms
I would turn back the pages of my calendar
Find the month and circle the date
    Before our evolving love faded
By what could not survive distance
We would have broken our hearts
If we had become an us
